Chapter 4: Staying Focused to Achieve Executive Success

Climbing the ladder and becoming a leader is a challenging endeavor that requires a strong commitment to achieving your goals. One effective approach to advancing your career is to set clear objectives and develop a clear plan for reaching them.

Start with manageable tasks, gradually taking on more significant challenges. Beginning with smaller goals can make you more open to taking risks, as there is less at stake. Embrace risks and challenges, as they are essential for personal and professional growth.

Always maintain a positive outlook, stay focused, and keep your dreams in sight—hard work and determination can lead you to accomplish anything you set your mind to. Internalize this message.

Our journeys will be unique, but a common experience may be encountering discouragement and negativity from peers, superiors, and even strangers. This often stems from the belief that formal education is the sole pathway to success and financial stability. Additionally, some individuals may feel threatened by others’ success, particularly when it reflects their unpursued aspirations. As Nicky Verd aptly stated, “Lack of a formal education is a death sentence to some and an opportunity to explore for others.”

Allow me to share a relatable story—one that anyone aspiring to succeed can draw inspiration from. As I progressed in my career, I encountered an invisible ceiling; the board of directors was hesitant to promote someone from within the organization.

Despite possessing the necessary skills and a positive attitude, along with experience from attending board meetings, their preconceived notions led to skepticism about my potential. They prioritized traditional educational qualifications, while my expertise came from self-directed learning rather than formal degrees. It may have seemed like a daunting situation, but it was not insurmountable.
